This is going to be the largest military exercise of the Russian Navy for the past two decades.

VLADIVOSTOK. April 5. VOSTOK-MEDIA – The Pacific Fleet ships will participate in a major exercise in the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean in late summer. This is going to be the largest military exercise of the Russian Navy for the past two decades.

Guided missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky will lead the exercise. Last week, accompanied by the Northern Fleet support ships, the Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) left Severdvinsk and is presently heading for the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Captain I rank Sergei Zhuga is in command of the naval force.

The Pacific Fleet ships are expected to join Pyotr Veliky later. In addition, warships from other Russian fleets as well as aviation will take part in the drill.

The exercise will include combat training, operational coordination and naval maneuvers, a spokesman for the Pacific Fleet told Vostok-Media. The focus will be on counter-terrorist operations in designated areas, crossings and near anchorages. In addition, the Russia’s Navy will address issues of safeguarding economic interests of Russia, including the protection of trade vessels in pirate-ridden areas. After the exercise, the Pacific Fleet naval force is likely to remain in the Gulf of Aden to patrol waters off the Horn of Africa.
