Legislators have passed a bill aimed to promote Primorye as a priority destination for migrants from the states of the former Soviet Union.

VLADIVOSTOK. October 5. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Primorye lawmakers have passed a bill that seeks to promote Primorye as a priority destination for migrants from the states of the former Soviet Union.

The Vice-Governor of Primorye Lyubovi Drozdova said at the legislative session that 84 out of 246 million rubles ($8.1m), earmarked in the 2010 Primorye budget for the voluntary resettlement initiative, will go toward affordable housing to migrants.

The initiative calls for participation of several districts in Primorye. This year only the Ussuriysk City District signed up for the resettlement program. At present, there are about 500 migrants who are on a waiting list for housing. About 9.5 million rubles have been alloted to provide temporary housing to the migrants.

“There is a growing need to promote the state initiative on the voluntary resettlement among the states which have the highest migration potential,” said Lyubovi Drozdova. “The vast majority of those who move to Primorye are Ukrainians, Armenians and Uzbeks. We should promote the initiative in other states as well. Therefore we have prepared and submitted all the necessary documents for consideration. We need some additional 500,000 rubles ($16,400) for the promotion of Primorye as a priority destination for migrants.”

These are by no means the last measures, Drozdova said. “New steps will follow to obtain the migration zone status for Primorye,” she said.
