Summit of the Asian-Pacific Seafarers’ Unions finished in Manila

The delegates unanimously insist on ratification of the Consolidated Maritime Labour Convention.

The Summit of the Asian-Pacific Seafarers’ Unions finished in the capital of the Philippines, Manila, in late February, 2008. The event gathered representatives of the seafarers unions from 13 countries – Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Australia and Russia. Nikolai Sukhanov, chairman of the Far Eastern regional organization of the Russian Seafarers’ Union, also took part in the meeting.

Nikolai Sukhanov told Vostok Media, the agenda of the summit meeting included the issues of the social protection of seamen. All the participants unanimously decided that it’s necessary to facilitate ratification of the Consolidated Maritime Labour Convention.

The president of the Indonesian Seafarers’ Union told that Indonesia had already made a decision about ratification of the Convention this year. The ratification of the Convention by all the Asian-Pacific countries will help cardinally improve social protection of seamen.

The special attention of the participants was drawn to the seamen sailing under the flags of convenience. The growing number of shipwrecks, annual deaths of about 2000 seamen on the wrecked vessels, numerous cases of leaving the seamen without means of support by dishonest ship owners, pirate attacks on ships, and loss of vessels with seamen on them raised deep concerns among the participants of the summit meeting. The participants decided to continue fighting against the flags of convenience after revision of the forms and methods of the fight taking into account the present situation in the world.

The participants of the meeting unanimously supported the resolution adopted on the summit and agreed to join actions on all the unsolved problems.

The Philippine Minister of Transport made a speech before the summit delegates. He said that the combined efforts of the Asian-Pacific countries, CEO of shipping companies and seafarers’ unions would contribute to the successful development of the maritime industry in the Asian-Pacific region.
