VLADIVOSTOK. February 9. VOSTOK-MEDIA – The Primorsky Krai city of Arsenyev has again been chosen as venue for Japanese Film Festival. Japanese Consul-General in Vladivostok Yamada Jun and consular official Kawakami Junichi arrived in Arsenyev to take part in the opening ceremony of the film festival.

The Japanese officials have visited Arsenyev History Museum. They took much interest in the history of the city as well as the wildlife of Primorsky Krai. But the thing that really took their fancy was the museum stand on the Akira Kurosawa’s film “Dersu Uzala”, which was shot in the city, and the director himself. In addition, they visited the local registry office and the Childrens Circus School.

After the WWII, Japanese prisoners of war were held in Primorsky Krai. Those of them who lost their lives were buried near Arsenyev. Each year a number of Japanese nationals arrive in the city to take part in a ceremony paying tribute to these men. The Japanese consular officials too have visited the burial site of those brave men.

The opening ceremony of the film festival, which was held in Kosmos movie theatre, gathered Arsenyev residents of different ages. Aleksandr Gorbunov, First Deputy Mayor of Arsenyev expressed his gratitude to Japanese Consulate in Vladivostok for the organization of the film festival.

“I’m sure such events contribute to the strengthening of friendly relations between the two countries,” said Aleksandr Gorbunov.

Students of a local music school performed a Japanese song at the opening ceremony and then the films’ screening began. During the three-day film festival, visitors had a chance to acquaint themselves with masterpieces of such Japanese film directors as Junji Sakamoto, Hara Keiichi, and Yoji Yamada.
