Rare Japanese Crane Undergoing Rehabilitation in Safari Park

VLADIVOSTOK. May 11. VOSTOK-MEDIA – An examination of a crane that was sent in late April to the Primorye-based Safari Park for rehabilitation has revealed that the bird is the Red-crowned Crane, also known as the Japanese Crane. The bird was given name Zhura, manager of the Safari Park Dmitry Mezintsev told Vostok-Media.

When the bird was found it was thought to be the White-naped Crane.

The Japanese Crane is one of the most endangered species of bird the largest crane in the world. There are more than 200 couples nestling in the Russian Far East. In Japan the Red-crowned crane is considered to be a sacred bird and is often depicted in art and literature.
