Sergey Mironov, the Chairman of the Federation Council suggested counter measures against imported car tax hike

VLADIVOSTOK. January 12. VOSTOK-MEDIA – “The government should take active measures for soothing the negative social aftermath caused by increase in the imported car tax”- stated Sergey Mironov today on the eve of carrying into effect new rate of duty.
“The decision to raise tax on the foreign made cars, which triggered so many disputes, will not be reconsidered. Yet the pained reaction of the citizens requires further steps from the government or, in other way, the economical sense of the tax increase will lose value.”
Sergey Mironov suggests, at first, to accept compensatory measures regarding citizens whose prosperity and well-being are connected with import of the foreign made cars. First of all it should be aimed at assistance of small businesses in related spheres of economy. Second, the hike of the tax should not become the cause for groundless rise of prices on home made cars. “The society has a right to demand comprehensive information from the car manufacturers of the traditionally Russian make of cars: what they plan to do and how much time it will take, so that to enhance the quality and safety of their cars in these soft terms. The Government should oblige the car manufacturers to provide such dada.”- says senator.
“The notorious issue concerning imported car tax showed that decisions that have an impact on many people, should be made in the conditions of openness and with precise account of interests of all social groups.”- stated Sergey Mironov.
We remind that new car import tax come into effect on January 12, 2009.
The tax for new cars will be increased by 6 %. The tax on foreign made cars with age 3-5 years is raised by 10 %. From now on the used cars are considered to be the cars that rolled off the production line more than 5 years ago (Earlier a 7-year use car was regarded as ‘used’).
According to Sergey Mironov, the speaker of the Federation Council the raise of the car import tax would not affect the quantity of Russian cars bought by the residents. He also believes that measures suggested by the government would not affect the quality of Russian cars. Experts predict that prices on the foreign made cars will increase by 8-10 % as a result of car import tax hike. It can bring thousands of people of the Primorsky Krai to ruin
