17 Mushers to Participate in 2010 Beringia Sled-Dog Race

The ceremonial opening, festivities and the qualifying race begin tomorrow, March 13.

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. March 12. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Ivan Nivani and German Ainachgin of Olyutorsky District have entered for the upcoming dog-sled race 2010 Beringia, which will start in Esso village. So far, 17 mushers have signed up for the event. Ivan Nivani is a first-timer, while German Aynachgin has participated in sled-dog races for the past two years. Altogether, six rookies and eleven skilled mushers, including two Beringia champions – Nikolay Levkovsky and Andrei Pritchin, will toe the starting line on March 14.


The ceremonial opening, festivities and the qualifying race, based on which the competitors’ starting order will be determined, will take place on March 13. Kamchatka Krai Governor Aleksei Kuzmitsky will participate in the ceremonial opening.


The first leg of the race – Esso-Anavgay-Yanpat - begins on March 14. The 950-km long Beringia is divided into 15 legs, its route passes through 12 towns and villages of Kamchatka Krai.


This year, the mushers will compete for the Prize of Kamchatka Krai Governor – off-road vehicle UAZ Patriot; the second and the third - a snowmobile and outboard engine, respectively.


This year, at the request of the Governor 1.5 million rubles were allocated from the Kamchatka Krai budget for the organization and performance of Beringia. GDK Social Partner KAO has funded an additional 2.5 million rubles.


MegaFon - the official mobile phone partner of the 2010 Beringia – will furnish the participants in and the organizing committee of the competition with cell phones and reliable communication. This will help mushers to save time at different legs of the race, as well as to receive information real-time. Rosno is the official insurance company of the event.
