The peak of co-operation between our countries was in the 1950 and ‘60s, when many Indonesian sailors were receiving training in Vladivostok.

VLADIVOSTOK. October 12. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Vladivostok Mayor Igor Pushkarev has received a letter from Banbang Dwi Hartono, mayor of the Indonesian city of Surabaya.

The text of the letter is as follows:

“Our cities are really far from each other and belong to different cultures. This, however, is not a serious obstruction for development of our relations, quite the opposite, this arouses our interest in establishing strong ties with each other. I am looking forward to your visit to Surabaya as part of the implementation of the programme of co-operation between our cities.”

Thus, Surabaya may become the first Indonesian city that concluded friendly relations agreement with Vladivostok. This agreement is a necessary step in subsequent signing of sister-cities agreement.

Russia and the Republic of Indonesia are bound together by long-standing friendly relations. The peak of co-operation between our countries was in the 1950 and ‘60s, when many Indonesian sailors were receiving training in Vladivostok. The Submarine Monument mounted in the heart of Surabaya is a symbol of this cooperation. The Monument is a retired Soviet-era submarine S-56, which was made in Vladivostok and subsequently converted to a museum ship. At present there is a Center of Indonesian Culture in Vladivostok. Also, Indonesian businessmen, diplomatic officials and cultural delegations are frequent visitors of the city, reported press-service of the Vladivostok Administration.
