State Duma to Debate New Initiative Aimed at Tackling Alcohol Abuse
Gennady Onishchenko, the Chief Sanitary Inspector of Russia, has come forward with a proposal to rewrite warning lettering on liquor bottle labels and advertisements of alcohol beverages.
VLADIVOSTOK. November 12. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Gennady Onishchenko, the Chief Sanitary Inspector of Russia, has come forward with a proposal to rewrite warning lettering on liquor bottle labels and advertisements of alcohol beverages.
“The harmless alcohol warning, which reads: ”Alcohol abuse results in harm to your health”, will be replaced by “Alcohol is poison!” and “Alcohol kills millions!”. Labels should bear the picture of a decomposed liver,” Life News quoted Gennady Onishchenko as saying.
The measure is said to be very helpful in reducing alcohol abuse among population.
At present the State Duma is set to debate new regulations relating to markings on alcohol products. Gennady Onishchenko seems to favor the idea to ask for young persons’ ID when buying beer, Totalweek.ru news website quoted the source close to the State Duma as saying.
According to the recent study, in Primorsky Krai about 30 percent of domestic crimes are committed in a state of alcoholic intoxication. There are approximately 36 thousand people attending drug abuse clinics in Primorsky Krai. Moreover there are more than 7 thousand registered alcoholics. Two years ago Primorsky Krai therapists for substance abusers started to beat the alarm. The number of young individuals, who indulge in drinking, has increased 2.5-fold. The majority of them are suffering excessive beer drinking. As is often the case, beer is subsequently replaced by hard liquors or even drugs. As a result, after five or seven years, a person turns into a full-fledged alcoholic or drug addict.
According to the official data, an average Russian citizen consumes 18.5 liters of pure alcohol annually. But in reality the figure is much higher, because the official statistics do not include counterfeit alcohol products. A toxicological monitoring revealed that about 80 individuals suffer from acute alcohol poisoning. Every month alcohol kills 13-15 people.
