ANADYR. May 14. VOSTOK-MEDIA – A considerable decline in number of Polar bears in Wrangel Island may be a seasonal phenomenon.

“We are not talking about catastrophe as yet” - says Alexander Gruzdev, the manager of the famous similarly-named Arctic natural reserve. In the course of polar bear population estimation, that was conducted at the island this spring, there were found a few lairs and bears’ footprints.

According to the scientist, it may be connected with relocation of snow covering at the island. This year a snow mantle happened to be very thin in those places where she-bears usually arrange lairs. More precise conclusions may be made after considering the results of polar bear population survey. It will be carried out in August.

It should be mentioned that there were no in-depth surveys on these polar predators for many years.

According to Alexander Gruzdev, at the present time the program on study of Chukotka-Alaskian population of Polar bear involving the use of satellite-linked tags is being elaborated.
