Development of Youth Volunteer Movement to be Discussed in Kamchatka

VLADIVOSTOK. March 16. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Development options of the youth volunteer movement for the support of conservation areas will be discussed at an international conference in Kamchatka, which is held with the assistance of WWF.

“The conference aims at analyzing and assessing the prospects of development of the youth volunteer movement in Kamchatka,” Aleksandra Filatkina, Press officer of WWF Kamchatka/Bering Sea, told Vostok-Media. “The movement should contribute considerably to the cause of the conservation of cultural and natural heritage of the peninsula. Organizers of the conference intend to find out new ways of effective collaboration between the youth and specially protected natural areas.”

Young scientists, postgraduates and students of various vocational schools and universities of Kamchatka Krai will take part in the conference.

Reports will be presented by experts with state and non-governmental environmental organizations, including WWF Kamchatka/Bering Sea, Kronotsky Nature Reserve, Komandorsky State Nature Biosphere Nature Reserve, Kamchatka Volcanoes Nature Park, Northwestern Department of Fisheries and Water Resources (Sevvostrybvod) and other organizations.

Ethnologist Olga Murashko, Russia’s State Duma expert, Head of the information center of Indigenous People of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation, will be the special guest at the conference. She will present a paper on the involvement of youth in the study of cultural and natural heritage of the indigenous peoples.

The conference will also discuss some pressing issues. Tatyana Gordienko, Chief Fishery Biologist at Marine Mammals Monitoring Department, Sevvostrybvod, intends to focus on the issue of conserving the unique herd of eared seals in Avachinskaya Bay.

The proceedings will be published following the results of the conference.
