‘Bear Patrol’ Searches Polar Bear Lairs in Chukotka

The scientists plan to count the number the animal units living at the coast

ANADYR. February 19. VOSTOK-MEDIA – The ‘bear patrol’ examines seashore of Iul’tinsk region of Chukotka. The scientists will look for Polar bears lairs.
Special attention will be paid to Yakkan cape. Exactly at this region the bears pass over from Vrangel’ Island to the continent. Besides, biologists assume that at the territory of the cape several rookeries of walruses emerged.
Year after year these mammals migrate further to south and Polar bears follow them.
The scientists plan to count the number the animal units living at the coast at the present time. The beginning of the Expedition is planned on the early April. The scientists will be equipped with three snowmobiles so that the expedition will take about two weeks.
The project called ‘Bear Patrol’ has been operating in Chukotka since 2006. Its main purpose is to protect people from attack of Polar bear and to study the population of these animals in natural habitat.
