Delegation of U.S. Agency for International Development Arrives to Sakhalin

UZHNO-SAKHALINSK. May 19. VOSTOK-MEDIA - Vadim Rokotov, the chairman of the Committee for International, Foreign Economic and Interregional Relations of the Sakhalin Region Administration met with the delegation of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Vadim Rokotov made the point that Administration of Sakhalin Region has been actively co-operating with USAID for many years and welcomed the year-by-year increasing diversity of issues discussed and he also pointed at the fact that the number of participants keeps increasing.
In the framework of the program ‘USA – Far Eastern Region: active partnership” a dozen of projects have been implemented in Sakhalin with total budget of more than $750,000 over the 6-year period. The program includes preservation of population of wild salmon, rendering aid to a mother and her child, various disease control, assistance to small and medium business and many other activities. The management of the region is willing to maintain co-operation with USAID in these areas.
Steve Giddens stated that it was a pleasure to work with such a responsible partner as the administration of Sakhalin Region. He also addressed issues concerning development of tourism industry through the Nevelsk sea port in the framework of the program ‘USA – Far Eastern Region: Municipal Partnership’. The Department of U.S. state allocated $3.3 million for the project which is to be implemented within 3 year period.
According to the data provided by the Committee for International, Foreign Economic and Interregional Relations of the Sakhalin Region Administration, the delegation will stay in Sakhalin for a week. The foreign guests intend to meet with mayors of Dolinsk, Okha, Korsakov and with representatives of Exxon company and with Department for Social Protection of the Administration of the Region. Members of the delegation will discuss operating programs and their efficiency. The issues concerning prospects for cooperation with representatives of the government institutions, public organizations and local public are also to be discussed.
