Spearheaded by the Russian Regional Ecology Center (RREC), local publicity consolidated its activity aimed at the supervision of the project implementation

MOSCOW. January 21. VOSTOK-MEDIA – The publicity of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region is greatly concerned of the uncertainty connected with the Nord Stream project preparation. First of all people concerned about possible route derivation of the gas pipe line from the north route to south one near the island Gogland and the negative impact on the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea.

“If the south alternative would be chosen the negative impact of the project on the marine preserve ‘Ingermanlandsky’ and the main fishing grounds of the Gulf of Finland would be increased. The shipping activity at the south of the island Gogland and the dangerous objects situated at the bottom of the Gulf of Finland will increase the risk of gas pipe line damage.”- said Elena Surovikina, the spokeswoman of the Russian Regional Ecology Center.

Also increases the accident risk connected with crude oil transportation and as consequence- transboundary pollution with its negative impact on the marine biota.
