Ship with Russian Crew Arrested in Australia

21 марта 2008, 14:32
Australian authorities stand for the rights of the Russian seamen.

A Panamanian registered ship ‘DD Vanguard’ of the DD Shipping Company was detained in the port of Melbourne on March 20, 2008.
The vessel was detained after the visit of an ITF inspector. Nikolai Sukhanov, chairman of the Far Eastern Regional Branch of the Russian Seafarers Union, told Vostok Media the main reason for the detainment of the vessel was the absence of an ITF standard collective agreement and low wages of seamen that accounted for less than $100 a week.
The ITF Australia coordinator stated that it was a shameful example of exploiting foreign seamen in the Australian territorial waters. ITF recommended the Federal Government of Australia to revoke the right of navigation in the Australian waters for the DD Vanguard.
The DD Shipping Company is headquartered in Vladivostok and possesses 9 practically modern vessels sailing under flags of convenience. All crews are staffed with Russian seamen. The repeated calls of the Russian Seafarers Union to the company about concluding a collective agreement brought no results.
