Primorsky Krai Legislature Deputy Arrested in USA
Yuri Stepanchenko may now face deportation to Russia.
VLADIVOSTOK. December 21. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Yuri Stepanchenko, a former deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Primorsky Krai, has been arrested in New York by U.S. authorities, Vesti news channel reports.
Yuri Stepanchenko may now face deportation to Russia, where he has been searched for by the law enforcement agencies on suspicion for having committed a number of crimes, including money laundering on an especially large scale.
According to a law enforcement source, the Russian national was detained Dec. 3 by U.S. Customs Service officers upon a request from Russian side. At present the future of the detainee is unclear as the U.S. authorities may themselves press charges against Yuri Stepanchenko, since the money laundering has been undertaken by him in the USA as well, but they also may deport him to Russia.
