State Duma seeks opportunities for setting-up a transportation corridor over China.

VLADIVOSTOK. October 22. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Residents of Primorsky Krai were always concerned about the transportation cost. It is quite expensive to take a trip to European Russia, what is more it requires much time. As for the neighboring regions, the distance doesn’t seem to matter much. Yet the cost is still high for the residents. It is still unknown whether it is the shortage of tours or monopolism that affects cost.

The solution to the transportation problem, however, should be found in the currently discussed draft law “On Transfrontier Co-operation”.

Despite the implementation of the state programme on provision of discounted airline tickets to Mocow and St.-Petersburg for residents of the Russian Far East, many locals still cant afford to take a trip to western part of the country due to the high ticket prices. At present a round-trip ticket to Moscow costs 14,000 rubles and up, whereas, during the holiday season airline ticket prices skyrocket making family travel vacations unaffordable for majority of middle-class families.

Opportunities for reopening of transport corridor over China are also discussed within the draft law “On Transfrontier Co-operation”. Chairman of Committee of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev expressed his confidence that setting-up of the transportation corridor over China will allow it to make it less time-consuming for Primorsky Krai residents to get to Moscow and thus will scale down prices on air tickets and reduce fuel consumption.

The setting-up of the transport corridor over the northeastern part of China will shorten the air distance between Vladivostok and Moscow by almost 1,000 km. In the 1960s the transport corridor was closed for USSR aviation on the initiative of the Chinese authorities, who didn’t share Khrushchevs politics.
