“Death Walls” Prohibited On Kamchatka
Drift fishery causes irreparable damage to marine biosphere
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. June 23. VOSOTK MEDIA – Deputies of the Regional Legislative Assembly addressed to the prime minister of Russian Federation V. Putin with a petition to interfere in decimation of Kamchatka salmon and to prohibit drift nets.
The Committee on Fisheries of the Regional Legislative Assembly reported to Vostok Media that the drift fishery caused damage to marine biosphere because the construction of these nets have such a construction that they damage everything what they catch. This is the main cause why the half of young salmon does not reach the place of spawning.
RIA Vostok media reports that the same situation was in 1950-s. 30 collective farms went bankrupt and 27 coastal villages became uninhabited because of the Japanese drift nets. Over 25 years needed to restore the ecosystem and salmon fishery. In 1992 quadruple convention (Canada, the USA, Russia and Japan) was entered on salmon preserve in northern part of the Pacific Ocean which prohibited drift fishery in open sea. In spite of this Russia permitted drift fishery on the commercial basis for Japan.
