Kamchatka Physicians Use State-of-the-Art Techniques of Blood Transfusion

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. June 23. VOSTOK-MEDIA – A unique method of blood transfusion called autodonation has been used during hip replacement operation in Lukashevsky hospital, Kamchatka.
This technique allows patients avoid postoperative complications and brings to naught the hazard of contamination through hemotransfusion. Replacement arthroplasty operations are often rather traumatic and may result in major loss of blood. The new method allows to draw off the patients own blood prior to operation, conserve and use it, once the operation is done, without using of donated blood.
Previously, in Russia the method was used only in large Federal referral centers delivering high-tech medical care. And now the technique has been used for the first time at regional level.
Moreover, to improve flow properties of donated blood and its components a method of microaggregate bedside and leukocytic filtration has been made a permanent feature of the regional hospital. When using this technique, donated blood is infused only after second filtration.

These methods proved to be a success and they are to be put on a permanent basis, said Ministry of Public Health for Kamchatka region.
