China Outstrips USA in Number of Internet Users

VLADIVOSTOK. April 24. VOSTOK MEDIA – The number of Internet users in China reached 221 million, the PRC Ministry of Industry and Informatization said.
For the first time China surpassed USA in the number of internet users, said in a statement released on the Ministry’s website. But taking into account the huge population of China the share of Internet users remains low.
The PRC authorities generally encourage development of computer technologies but strengthen their attempts to regulate content of ‘ailing’ websites in the Chinese segment of the Internet. Using the filters separating websites found by ‘undesirable’ key words is an indispensable condition for search systems in China. The ‘black list’ of key words includes Falun Gong sect, Taiwan independence, tortures in prisons and student protests.
