Vladivostok Greeted Japanese Students with Bread and Salt

VSUES gave a hospitable welcome to senior Russian language students at Fushiki High School.

VLADIVOSTOK. March 25. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Students of Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service (VSUES) received Japanese guests – senior Russian language students at Fushiki High School in Toyama prefecture.


A VSUES spokesman told Vostok-Media, Garmoniya School, which offers courses on the Japanese language and participates in student exchange programs, hosted the meeting. This is the first time the Japanese students and their class teacher Tanaka Misamitsu visit Russia. In VSUES the delegation was given a hospitable welcome by the Head of International Programs Department and other officers at VSUES International Relations Department.


The VSUES officers organized a walking tour for the Japanese guests around the University campus, invited them to a concert in the Underground concert hall, and later held an informal meeting with VSUES students. The welcoming ceremony featured the traditional Russian custom of hosts presenting bread and salt to their visitors. During the concert the Japanese students captured performances on their cell phones, applauded loudly and cheered the dancers by shouting “Alright! Awesome! Cool!”.


In their turn, the guests performed two Russian songs – Antoshka and Kalinka Malinka, together with their Russian language teacher Oksana Bondarenko.


During the meeting, the Russian and Japanese students talked to each other in Russian, took pictures of each other and exchanges souvenirs. Oksana Podolko, a third-year International Relations student at VSUES, who had participated in the student exchange program in Toyama University, helped the students to translate some words and expressions. At the end of the meeting, Academic Affairs Administration invited the Japanese students, who will graduate in 2011, to go into further academic study in VSUES.
