Census in Vladivostok Goes Ahead as Planned

VLADIVOSTOK. October 25. VOSTOK-MEDIA – The Russian Census of 2010 in Vladivostok is going ahead as planned, Alfred Tatarchuk, the deputy head of the Vladivostok government, said at a televised conference today.

Federal State Statistics Service officers and government officials from across the Russian Far East, as well as census workers, took part in the conference.

Conducting census in the Russian Far East, census takers are challenged by the vastness of the territory, the necessity of counting seamen, and by the high migration rate.

“All issues arising in the process of census enumeration of Vladivostok community are being tackled effectively,” Alfred Tatarchuk said. “Training and census stations are equipped with everything needed; they are provided with communication equipment and security guards. In addition, census takers cooperate with police officials who fill them in on the updates of potentially dangerous residents and accompany them to the apartments where such people live."

Census officials are working together with Primorye-based ship-owners in order to take an accurate census of the seamen before they set to sea. They also collaborate with the companies engaged in the major construction projects underway on Russky Island due to a large number of migrants currently working at the construction site. The data collected by census takers on Russky Island shows there are over 11,000 migrants working at the site.

The Russian Census of 2010 is set to finish on October 25. Alfred Tatrchuk and the head of Primorye Statistics Service Viktor Shapovalov, who monitor the progress of census operations in Primorye, are confident that the 2010 count data will be complete and accurate, Vladivostok City Council said in a press-release.
