China to Construct 30,000 km Railway Lines by 2012

VLADIVOSTOK. November 25. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Within the next three years the total length of railway lines in China will reach 111,000 km, up from 80,000 km at present, Zheng Jian, chief planning officer with the Ministry of Railways, was quoted by RZD-Partner information agency as saying.

According to Mr. Zheng Jian, about 13,000 km of high speed railways will be constructed by 2012 as part of the plan. In addition, the project involves the construction of 804 state-of-the-art rail passenger terminals. 124 passenger terminals have been already constructed and put into service. By the end of 2009, another 100 of them will be put into operation.

Mr. Zheng Jian pointed out that the construction of new railway stations and passenger terminals is carried out along with redevelopment of exiting buildings, construction of roads and other infrastructure facilities, which procures work for a number of contracting organizations.
