VLADIVOSTOK. November 25. VOSTOK-MEDIA - RF Ministry of Natural Resources has formed an interdepartmental working group on preservation of Korean-Okhotsk population of grey whales at the initiative of the Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Yuri Trutnev, press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources reports.
The interdepartmental working group will focus on formulation of recommendations and solutions on preservation of Korean-Okhotsk population of grey whales, listed in the in the Russian Red Data Book, and implementation of Russia’s commitments relating to the preservation of the endangered species in the framework of the International Whaling Commission.
The working group will coordinate co-operation on management of grey whales population between scientific and non-profit organizations, all relevant federal executive bodies and the executive authorities of the constituents of the Russian Federation as well as companies undertaking oil and gas extraction projects in Sakhalin continental shelf.
Rinat Gizatulin, a spokesman for the Natural Resources Ministry, who was recently appointed as the Chairman of the working group, said: “We intend to work out an effective strategy for preservation of preservation and management of Korean-Okhotsk population of grey whales as well as to enhance coordination of scientific studies of these species.”
The working group comprises representatives of all relevant federal agencies, executive authorities of the constituents of the Russian Federation, spokesmen for scientific and non-profit organizations, oil and gas companies as well as renowned environmentalists.
