Captain of Foreign Ship Jailed for 3 Years for Crab Poaching in Kamchatka
The ship-owner fined 79 million rubles.
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. March 26. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Court has sentenced A. Katser, the master of the refrigerator vessel Ray, to 3 years in prison with disqualification to hold the position of captain in catching, processing or transport vessels for two years, for crab poaching in the Russia’s exclusive economic zone. He was also fined 300,000 rubles.
A spokesman for Kamchatka Krai Prosecutor’s Office said this is the first time in recent years that a captain pleads guilty and is sentenced to prison.
In May 2009, the ship entered the exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Okhotsk with violations of maritime regulations. When working the fishing grounds, the ship illegally loaded 124.6 tons of crab from unidentified vessels and kept the cargo in the specially equipped hold. ”The captain’s actions caused a considerable damage to the legally protected interests of the government and inflicted heavy damage to natural resources of the continental shelf in the amount of 78,919,190 rubles,” said a spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office.
On May 17, 2009, the vessel was detained by the coast guards.
Global Ocean Shipping Ltd, the owner of the Ray, was fined 78,919,190 rubles. The amount of damage included confiscated ship Ray.
