Floating Nuclear Power Plant to be Constructed in Chukotka

Chukotka Gov. Roman Kopin held a working meeting with Sergei Kirienko to discuss nuclear power program.

ANADYR. March 26. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Chukotka Gov. Roman Kopin held a working meeting with the Head of the Federal Atomic Energy Agency Sergei Kirienko Wednesday, March 24, to discuss the construction of floating nuclear power station in Chukotka.


The Declaration of Intent to construct the power station has been already signed and a suitable site for the construction of the nuclear power facility has been located.


According to the project, the floating nuclear power station will have the following specifications: displacement – 21.5 thousand tons, the length – 144 meters, width – 30 meters; power generating capacity – 70 MW; life cycle – 12 years; total service life – 40 years; a crew of 69 people.


There is an operating nuclear power facility in Chukotka - the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant. In March 2010, the power plant has successfully passed nuclear, radiation and fire safety tests. As the examination did not reveal any major defects, the Bilibino power plant was noted to have highly-qualified personnel. The Radiation at the site of the power plant does not exceed the background level.
