Russian Army to Form Separate Units for Minorities
Discipline in the armed forces will be maintained by military police.
VLADIVOSTOK. October 26. VOSTOK-MEDIA – The Russian Army will soon begin forming separate military units for minorities, and establish military police force.
The Argumenty I Facty daily reports the measures, which are set to take effect in 2011, are aimed to maintain discipline and to prevent ethnic clashes between the Slavs and natives of North-Caucasian republics serving in the Russian army.
Officials say military police exists in 44 countries around the world, including the armies of some former Soviet republics, such as Kazakhstan, Armenia and Georgia. The military police force will be headed by first vice-minister of defense, and will consist of 20,000 personnel.
