This is the first time that such a huge shipment of sheet steel has been transported in the Russian Far East.

VLADIVOSTOK. March 30. VOSTOK-MEDIA – TFM Logistics Company has delivered the trial consignment of strips to Vladivostok from South Korea.

A TFM spokesman said the first consignment of strips (sheet steel) has been delivered from the South Korean port city Pohang to the Commercial Port of Vladivostok for subsequent transportation to Chelyabinsk Tube Rolling Plant by rail. The transportation of the 800-ton consignment of strips has been carried out in Russia’s Far East for the first time. Up until now, only Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg and Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port could handle such huge shipments.

What makes this shipment unique is the cargo itself – strips for production of large-diameter single-joint welded pipes. Such pipes are very strong and used worldwide for construction of oil and gas pipelines. During transportation, to comply with cargo discharge procedure, every strip was separated by timber beam. Considering the off-gage cargo (each sheet is 4.5-meter wide), the transportation by rail is carried out with the use of special flat cars – strips-carriers.

As this is the first time that such a huge shipment of strips has been transported in Russia’s Far East, TFM had to deal promptly with problems arising during the discharge process, following the client’s instructions on the discharge and handling of the cargo in the port. Thanks to the longstanding collaboration between TFM and the Commercial Port of Vladivostok, all problems have been promptly settled and the cargo was handled in compliance with the instructions of the consignee.

Another challenge for TFM was to find a ship that would meet the demands of consignor from the South Korea and the requirements for transportation of strips.

At present, the strips are stored in the Commercial Port of Vladivostok. Soon, the cargo will be delivered to Chelyabinsk Tube Rolling Plant. Once the South Korean strips pass tests at the Chelyabinsk plant, the deliveries of strips will be put on a regular basis.

Another trial consignment of strips is waiting for loading in Japan. The shipment will be carried out by TFM Logistics Company in April through Nakhodka Commercial Sea Port.
