Somali Pirates Hijack Tanker with Russians on Board
Zodiac Maritime Agencies, the vessel’s agent, said efforts are underway to secure the release of the crew.
VLADIVOSTOK. December 30. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Somali pirates have seized a tanker with Russian nationals on board.
Captain and two other crew members of the hijacked tanker St. James Park are citizens of the Russian Federation, Lenta.ru news agency quoted Andrew Mwangura, the East Africa Coordinator of Seafarers Assistance Program, as saying. The ship was seized on Monday, Dec. 28, by Somali pirates.
Zodiac Maritime Agencies, the vessel’s agent, said that efforts were underway to secure the early and safe release of all 26 crew members and the ship. Zodiac Maritime Agencies says there are no reports of injuries to crew members. The company refused to disclose any further information concerning the vessel saying it might be dangerous for the sailors. The other crew members are reportedly the citizens of Ukraine, Georgia, Bulgaria, Romania, Philippines, Poland, India and Turkey.
The vessel was hijacked in the International Recommended Transit Corridor, a patrol zone through the Gulf of Aden.
The St James Park had left Spain and headed to Thailand. The vessel carried 13,000 t. of chemicals, which are used in the manufacturing of plastic products.
