China Defies International Standards

In recent years, China’s role in the UN Human Rights Council has changed considerably.

VLADIVOSTOK. March 10. VOSTOK-MEDIA – Having become a major economic and political power, China now has its influence in almost all areas, including human rights, Le Temps wrote. At present, Beijing is making a vigorous diplomatic effort to promote their human rights model, which is contrary to the universalism promulgated initially by the West.

“In recent years, China’s role in the UN Human Rights Council has changed considerably,” Sharon Hom, Executive Director of Human Rights in China, was quoted by Le Temps as saying. “Chinese delegations have become much more sophisticated, their members are young well-educated and intelligent people. They learned to speak language of the United Nations to show that they are true global players.”

“The fact that they have more control over their records may seem like a good thing. However, their purpose in not to promote human rights but to protect themselves as well as friendly countries, which in turn will support China. Beijing aims to remove the voices of civil society in China and to undermine international standards on behalf of an imaginary Chinese exceptionality or what is called cultural relativism,” said Sharon Hom.
