YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. August 16. VOSTOK-MEDIA – The opening ceremony of the 2nd International Pacific Salmon Forum took place at the Lesnoye Ozero children’s summer camp.
The scientific event gathered 24 school students from Russia, Canada and the US, including 12 young researchers from Sakhalin.
Sakhalin Education Minister Evgeny Safonov and the US acting consul-general in Vladivostok Mrs Patricia Miller participated in the opening ceremony.
Evgeny Safnov said the each year more countries are willing to take part in the event. This year’s event gathered American, Canadian and Sakhalin schoolchildren.
Botanists, hydrobiologists and fishery biologists will hold workshops on different topics as part of environmental education program called Salmon Watch. The children will visit a fish breeding facility and explore the underwater world of Sakhalin rivers and the Sea of Okhotsk.
Following the research the young ecologists will present their report at a conference called Salmon Issues in the Pacific, which is scheduled to be held on August 21 at the summer camp, a spokesman for the Sakhalin Administration told Vostok-Media.
